Just A Coincidence?
My upper body is aching. It was a good workout at California Fitness. Though the music wasn’t to my liking because it was just slow; I managed to gather enough motivation to run 25 min on the treadmill, before working out my shoulders, chest, biceps, triceps and abdominals. Still, I must say… it was rather fulfilling!
A thought struck me when I was chatting with Rebecca before I went for my workout. It suddenly dawned upon me that many jobs out there cause much harm to our bodies, due to stress, improper eating times, indigestion, lack of appetite, etc. Leaving the subjective nature of job fulfillment aside, almost all that’s left is about money.
But do we need to put ourselves into one of these crazy jobs outside, just to earn money? Of course there is a better way! And a much better way, with much better benefits to the body!
And the answer is – join the sports / fitness industry! Why? While tons of other jobs give stress of all kinds, producing harmful chemicals in our bodies, establishing oneself in the sports / fitness industry allows us to inject good chemicals into our bodies! Endorphins; for example, is very important for us to stay happy, rejuvenated & nimble to a ripe old age! At the moment, I seriously can’t think of any other job that would do so.
This leads on to the main highlight of this Blog entry - Something happened today which has put me in much amazement & wonder. Could all these be a sign or hint from God? Or could it just be a coincidence?
Here is a brief excerpt of the story…
Upon entering California Fitness gym, I ran into Raymond again. He’s the guy that I recently met at Suhaimi’s Body Combat class last Saturday. Just like almost every other participant, both of us think that Suhaimi is just damn ‘power!’ There is no other Body Combat instructor like him! Master Su… He’s the man…
Anyway, Raymond & I chatted much more today. He shared with me a lot about his interest in Taekwondo & I was stunned to hear that he is actually working at California Fitness! Ahhh!!! I didn’t know! He didn’t look like the sort! But well, he is… not an instructor, but an IT professional at California Fitness!
Wah, even IT staff can get to workout at the gym right after office hours. Why? Coz the gym office is his workplace! How envious I am…
While sharing about his interest in exercise & especially Taekwondo, Raymond suddenly brought up this topic, telling me that if I’m interested, I can apply to be a Fitness Professional at California Fitness!
When I heard that I was truly stunned. Huh? I didn’t mention anything about my intention to enter into the sports industry. How did he know? Did he guess? Or did he just say ‘out-of-the-blue’? Or is God trying to hint something to me?
So I stayed stunned for a few more seconds before asking whether I need qualifications to apply for this position. Raymond said no need, as long as I know how to present myself at the interview, possess experience in knowing how to use the gym machines & I have an interest in fitness.
Well, of coz I do! Come on! Perhaps joining California Fitness wasn’t a mistake afterall! Through this experience, I have discovered my passion in life! And my dearest girlfriend Rebecca was the one who stunned me some weeks ago, when she told me that actually most of my ECAs are sports-related!
Just yesterday I was praying & telling God that if this is the path that is good for me, please open doors & opportunities for me… please… please…
And just today I met a friend who turned out to be a staff at California Fitness! And ‘out-of-the-blue’ he mentioned that I could apply to be a Fitness Professional! He even mentioned that California Fitness will also consider training their Fitness Professionals to become Personal Trainers in the long run! Wow! That’s like a dream to me! Amazing! =)
What happened next was equally stunning to me. Before this, I didn’t notice that I have very slowly begun talking to people in the gym. From fellow gym goers, to gym instructors, towel attendants & even found out the one of the most senior instructor Reza, is actually my BMT instructor at Nee Soon Camp! I didn’t really realize this until today!
Coming out of the changing room, Raymond introduced me to the Group X studio manager, who turned out to be Deborah! Ahhh!!! She’s the aerobics instructor at the first Body Pump class that Rebecca & I attended! And I remember that we arrived late for the class...
Three of us chatted for a little while before Deborah walked off. I was surprised that Deborah recognized me! And I went for her class only once…
As if these occurrences weren’t enough, I ran into Redzuan (another Personal Trainer) in the lift, while leaving the gym! We chatted for a very short while before he gave me a firm hand-shake & we parted. During the short few minutes chat, I learnt that he has been in this line for several years, working in other clubs, doing freelance, before moving onto California Fitness Orchard club & now, Bugis club.
From all these incidents much earlier, as well as today, I slowly began to realize that there is some sort of similar pattern that’s taking place in my life.
When I was a temp staff working at StarHub Cuppage Centre, I saw a familiar face on the first day on the job! The person was Rebecca’s father. I didn’t know anything, but Uncle John was kind enough to bring me around, introducing me to quite a lot of colleagues at StarHub. Soon, I managed to get a permanent job in the company.
This time, it’s the same too. I didn’t initiate or mention anything. I’m just a regular gym go-er. Then I began to meet fellow club members, then towel attendants, gym instructors & even a staff who suddenly mentioned to me about trying out as a Fitness Professional! Is it all a sign? I’m really not sure, but I have shared this with Rebecca & she’s amazed & supportive of this career move too.
Perhaps this could be a sign from God that He’s giving me a chance to explore a career in the sports industry, because I believe that He took me out of StarHub & out of Gladys’ clutches for a reason… a good reason. But I have prayed & asked God for further confirmation, before I determine this as my next career path. All in all, I’m just utterly amazed & pleasantly surprised! Especially when I don’t have any interest in any other industry, at the meantime… God, please confirm & show me if this is the path for me… please… Thank you… Amen!
Emergence from BMT
God has been very good to me. I have never imagined this - a long lasting friendship between Sean & myself for the past 7 years!Sean Teng is a BMT mate whom I got to know during my BMT days back in the old Nee Soon Camp. Both of our company was under Lieutenant Patrick Tan & really... those days are difficult to be forgotten.God really has a way of things. Even after both of us passed out from BMT, we were assigned to the same Army Camp at Ayer Rajah, even though in different Army units. We continued to see each other along the stone-paved roads over the next 2 years... slowly becoming better friends, then close friends... & even occasionally calling each other up for a sneaky tea break at the canteen! Hahahaha... those were the days!Just when I thought that my birthday would just past me by without it even being significant enough to remember, Sean came into the scene! We agreed to meet for dinner some days ago coz Sean wanted to treat me dinner to celebrate my birthday at Siglap Cafe Cartel. It was a hot & humid day... & I was tired. But I pushed myself to go for the dinner appointment coz its my birthday dinner with Sean & he's my best friend.Over dinner we talked & laughed, as usual... the loudest in every cafe, food court or fast food centre which we patronised together. Somehow God is so amusing... He allowed interesting 'sparks' to fly, cultivating an interesting friendship between Sean & I. I think the couple with 4 daughters sitting on the table next to us must have been astonished at how roudy we were!Thereafter, after some serious as well as other nonsensical chat, we decided to go to Gelare for ice-cream dessert. Both of us ordered a 2-flavoured ice-cream cone each & sat at a table outside the restaurant, continuing our chat.I brought up an idea of going KTV together & Sean was immediately thrilled! He loves singing & said that he will arrange a KTV outing with me & his friends.Later, Sean got thirsty (see lah, eat ice-cream) & wanted to buy a drink from the coffee shop nearby. While walking to the bus stop, suddenly I asked him why isn't he going home to watch the much awaited soccer match between Manchester United & Liverpool! This perked him up & suddenly he realised that he was about to miss this exciting match! While I waiting at the bus stop for his bus to come, I suddenly thought of an idea - to watch soccer with him at his house! Afterall, its supposed to be a 'big fight' between 2 very good soccer teams. So we hopped on the bus when it came.It was the first time that I was going to his house to watch soccer, so I thought its quite a new experience. On the bus, we chatted other silly stuff that happened to us in the past. And we laughed & laughed... =)Even during our first overseas holiday trip together, we actually had a crush on the same girl in our tour group! Upon coming back, both of us thought it through & didn't find her attractive anymore. Both of us laughed at ourselves... Hahahaha... So silly...After leading me through rain shelters & open spaces where kids had just finished playing with their lanterns (lantern festival mah, not that I bothered anyway), we reached Sean's house. Its big. Much bigger than mine.During our bus trip, we realised that that soccer match that we are looking forward to had ended, so we decided to watch other ongoing soccer matches. It was then that I found out this perculiar habit about Sean - he liked to watch soccer only to see goals being scored. That means flicking between several soccer SCV channels over & over, just to see if goals are or have been scored. Hmm... I dunno whether to think of it as good or bad... or maybe its just odd... just Sean... =)This fella can be quite fickle-minded when it comes to watching sports. Apart from flicking between a few soccer channels, he also decided to watch tennis out of the blue! So we watched a womens' tennis match between France & Korea. Sean watched the game, while I watched the players' faces! I began commenting about their faces, say that they look tired, sun too glaring on their faces, etc. Sean found my comments very comical & laughed & laughed...In the midst of the switching between sports channels, I decided (as usual) to take sneaky video clips of Sean's intense look while watching the TV! 3 times I took rather interesting video clips & 3 times I got caught by Sean after filming for awhile. He always exclaimed "Eh!" whenever he saw me filming him! Then both of us laughed...He gave me a birthday card & the words were meaningful & appreciative. I really thank God for this good friend. Its really amazing how God puts people together... =)
Chorus of struggle from sin
But it goes against the way I amTo put my human nature downAnd let the Spirit take control of all I doCos' when those trials comeMy human nature shouts the thing to doAnd God's soft promptingCan be easily ignored
Nightmare in the night before my birthday
I woke up from my sleep at close to 6am coz I had a bad dream.I dreamt that I was walking around Blk 94C (my old flat at Bedok North Ave 4) & I suddenly began to be able to see evil spirits moving around. They were everywhere, everywhere I looked! And I tell u, it is true! Its not just a dream! When I was standing at the big open space at the centre of the block, I saw evil spirits walking around that area. When I looked up, I saw evil spirits moving along the corridor of the 1st floor. When I looked around me, I saw evil spirits walking all around the whole void deck! They had long curly dark hair that draped from their shoulders & their faces were grey & scary. Some had a scowl on their face; some were just walking around; others were also walking around but with their arms outstretched.I believe it wasn't just a dream because this can be real in life... just whether we are able to see them or not. I woke up wondering why I could see ghosts & suddenly became afraid that I might actually see them in real life. Afterall, I do know of an ex-colleague who used to be able to see such things.I started to sing a medley of Christian songs & slowly those words changed to become my own words of prayer! I began singing prayers to God! Then I started saying the sinner's prayer which I remembered from Reinhard Bonke's VCD titled 'Raised From The Dead'. Then I got up to play the last part of Pastor Joseph Prince's audio sermon.Surprisingly, in that short 30mins remaining of that 1.5 hrs sermon, several points began to speak to me. I started to send online SMS of short sentences to my own handphone, for future reference & reminder. When Pastor Joseph Prince began to say the sinner's prayer at the end of his sermon, I suddenly began to tear. It lasted abt 3 seconds, then it stopped leaving me wondering what went on. But I knew all these happened 4 a reason & it was all planned by God.Thinking back, I was reminded that God still cares very much for me & my needs. It didn't really come to my attention that when I lost my job, it was already the end of August & nearing my birthday. God helped me to get through more than 2 weeks of my life with only $200+. He also gave me discounted movie vouchers which I bought earlier this year. Then He showed me that I had another 3 free VideoEzy vouchers that was just sufficient to borrow & watch the complete Smallville DVD series of season 3!Then just as my savings went below $100 (which means I only spent $100+ in more than 2 weeks), my pay cheque came in! Then a week after, it was my birthday & I got another $250 from my parents, grandma & aunty! Furthermore, Sean is treating me dinner tonight & my SIM frens are going to treat me dinner on Wed night! I began to see God's hand providing for my financial needs, in terms of dinner & even after He has given me my pay cheque & birthday red packets!I'm just so amazed at this gracious God! Like what Pastor Joseph Prince said in his sermon, "God never said 'Eh, why you take so much fr me? You think My power grow on trees ah?" Its a typical Singaporean remark similar to "Eh, you think money grow on trees ah!" And I remembered that when I said the prayer along with Pastor Prince's sermon, that exact moment it just suddenly began to rain. Suddenly! After a few mins, it stopped. I was stunned & took it as a sign of God's shower of blessing on me. Thank You, God! =)
Just one sentence
Terrapins eat Neon fishes.
Living with Neon fishes
What are Neon fishes? Well, they are those small fishes with tiny bodies that have this neon blue glow-in-the-dark kind of illumination when light is shone on them at night. They are also the species of fish which I have long mistaken as guppies. Felt so 'pai sei' when the fish shop aunty corrected me 1 or 2 months ago.I have always been tempted to buy these little neon fishes to accompany my terrapins at home. Once, the uncle at another fish shop got so startled that I wanted to buy these fishes to rear with terrapins! He exclaimed that terrapins love to eat fish!Anyway, this temptation (or should I use a milder word - curiousity) has never left my mind. I still remained curious to see how my terrapins would respond to these little neon-ies.So it all happened today, when I was passing by the fish shop near Blk 85 market this morning. All of a sudden, I felt an urge to go in & take a look. Why? Coz these little neon-ies have always been sold at like $2 - $3 each. To my amazement, today the aunty was selling 10 fishes for $2! Gosh! I was so shocked when I saw the promotion sticker on her fish tank.I quickly made up my mind to buy 10 of these little fishes. For whatever reason the aunty is selling them cheaply, it doesn't really matter since they may not live that long with my terrapins anyway. When I reached home, I cleaned out both of terrapins' tanks & added more water to accomodate my new 'bait'. Somehow it all seemed like a scientific experiment to me.I put 4 fishes into the tank with 2 big terrapins. And the other 6 fishes into the tank with 3 smaller terrapins. At first, both the large & smaller terrapins started to get curious & chase the fishes around the tank. They tried to smell them & attempt to nibble at them. I mean, afterall... they are FOOD. =)After awhile, they got a bit bored with the fishes, so I presumed that everything was pretty okay. So I went away to do my own things. When I came back, out of curiousity, I saw Jacey (one of the big terrapins) chewing away at a corner! I was shocked! Could it be one of the fishes? I bent over to have a closer look & oh dear! It was one of the Neon fishes! Its body was in little shreds, with tiny shreds of red here & a few more shreds of blue there. These shreds floated & landed under a huge rock & Jacey began scrambling for the remaining scraps of that fish. But it couldn't move the heavy rock, so trying to reach there from other sides of the rock, it finally gave up.As for the other tank with smaller terrapins, none of the 6 fishes were missing. Which is good.Later when I came back, I noticed that there were only 2 Neon-ies left with the big terrapins! Oh no! So fast! Are they that hungry? Or just curious? This time, there weren't even any shreds left! You carnivorous turtles! So I quickly picked up the remaining 2 fishes & put them with the other 6 fishes in the other tank.So the hypothesis proved true in the tank with big terrapins. That terrapins do eat fish.As for the other tank with smaller terrapins, I noticed that there were only 7 fishes left at the end of the day. That's 1 missing! Well, that fella could be in hiding or it could have been eaten. But I doubt it, coz my other 3 terrapins are nice. The 7 Neon-ies swim freely right next & around them, without a care in the world! I wonder where is the 8th Neon fish. Maybe I'll check again tomorrow.Overall, it has truly been an interesting experience for my terrapins. A small price to pay (i.e. $2) for a small treat & some fun (to hone their outdoor survival skills when I eventually release them). Let's see what happens over the next few days... =)
A quiet song that speaks
I learnt this Christian song at the Saints For Christ (SFC) retreat back in 1998. Audrey Neo taught us this song that she learnt from YFC (Youth For Christ).Somehow the lyrics of the song has been sticking in my head all these years (7 years already). Here are the lyrics...O Lord Help Me BeWhy have you chosen meOut of millions Your child to beYou know all the wrongs that I've doneOh, how could You pardon meForgive my iniquityAnd save me, give Jesus Your SonChorus:Oh Lord help me beWhat you want me to beYour Word I will strive to obeyMy life I now giveFor You I will liveAnd walk by Your side all the wayI'm amazed to knowThat a God so great could love me soHe's willing and wanting to blessHis grace is so wonderfulHis mercies so bountifulI can't understand it, I confess
What's with the skies?
It's strange. I have been feeling moody lately. Worse still, I don't feel enthusiastic about going for Body Combat or gym training. Is it becoz I'm jobless & aimless? Or is it becoz of this hot, humid & glaring weather? I think it's both...Oh dear... I have a feeling that this Blog entry is going to sound depressive. But the truth is that I have been feeling rather down & out lately. Sleeping 8 - 9 hrs a day isn't exactly the best thing for my body too, coz it's been getting more & more lethargic. But then again, the good long days of rest did help to recuperate from my recently resigned stressful job.Seriously, I dunno how to get rid of all these 'sian'-ness. Even when I get up every morning, it's become a thought of - "What should I eat for breakfast? Cook or buy?" I like eating from the chicken rice that's near my house, but that stall aunty always ask me why I'm not working today. Its irritating & annoying. Why does she always have to ask me that? Must I finally exclaim that I have lost my job, that's why I'm buying chicken rice from her stall? Argh...My birthday is coming this week. But the mood seems totally off. Doesn't feel like its my birthday. And the sun has been angry all these while, showing its anger by blazing its sun rays all over the country. Until people have written to Today newspaper to grumble about how they travel to work. How do I cheer up? Someone please advise me...
The Greenie
I was just going for my last pee before going to sleep, when this frightful thing happened.
Before using the toilet bowl, I opened the toilet window for some ventilation, coz the air was quite warm & still in the toilet.
After I had pee-ed, I flushed the toilet & stepped forward towards the basin to wash my hands. Then I saw it. The flying greenie. It was a freaking big green insect. I couldn't make out what kind of insect it was, but it looked like a green praying mantis or a green grasshopper. Either way, it was BIG. I mean, BIG.
Thinking about it now, I could recall that it was almost 9 cm in length, with long thin feelers & legs. Now that was a scary sight. Scary enough to scare both my Mum & myself out of our wits! Although I have seen a cockroach almost as big as that before, this green fella isn't a cockroach!
Whatever that is, it immediate struck fear into me. I closed the door behind me slowly & went to the kitchen to grab the Baygon insect spray. It always pisses me off that I have no guts to catch any insect. I always (& I really mean always) use the insect spray. And I tell you, insect sprays are one of the lousiest instrument to get rid of pests. Why? Coz when you spray it at them, they take forever to die & worse of all... they FLY at you! Argh!
So much for trying to chase the big flying greenie out of my house. It was a split second of adrenalin the moment after I sprayed at it, becoz this fella flew straight at me! AHHH!!! I dodged instantaneously to avoid contact with it & it swooped past me!
In that frantic moment, I forgot that I was hiding behind the door while trying to spray at it, while it was on the toilet window. When I ducked away from it, I pulled the door & it slammed very loudly. That woke my parents who came rushing towards the sound.
In another split second, I heard a high pitch squeal! It came from my Mum (obviously it couldn't come from my Dad; besides, I have never before heard him scream when faced with insects). My Mum screamed becoz she accidently stepped on it, while rushing towards the toilet! She screamed & jumped around trying to see what she had step on.
Both parents & I scanned the floor, until I saw the green shape on the lower part of the white wall near the toilet. My Dad went to the kitchen to find a small plastic bag to catch it, while my Mum rushed to her room toilet to wash her feet. I was still in a state of semi-shock as I eyed that green flying 'gremlin'.
My Dad came over & slowly put the plastic over the top of the green 'goblin' & immediately gripped the end of the plastic bag, the moment the green killer mantis jumped upwards in an attempt to escape. And there it was - Hahahahaha... trapped in the small clear plastic bag, while my Dad held the other end tightly with his fingers.
It took me a few seconds to adjust my state of mind & body to this change of situation. Then I moved to stop my Dad from trying to release it back into the grass below. I said "No! Don't throw it away! It will come back again!" Afterall, this evil looking green rascal did come in through that exact toilet window.
It took me another few seconds to adjust to the scary struggling green pest inside the plastic bag. Then I took a rubberband & tied the open end of the plastic bag. Now, I felt safe & eyed that green evil monster with wide eyes. I took tied up plastic bag & hit it against the kitchen door a few times, in an effort to stun the insect. Also to get revenge on it for scary my Mum & me.
Again, I eyed this horrendous greenie a few minutes watching its eyes, legs, etc. Afterall, it is seldom that get to observe this kind of insect this close... about 3 cm from my face.
Then I went into my room to grab my digital camera. I wanted to take a few photos of this green irritating house intruder. The plastic bag made the photo of the insect a bit blur, but no matter... I just wanted to capture this moment.
After putting back my camera, I came back to the kitchen & the green pesty irritant had stopped moving. It must have run out of oxygen. Too bad. I don't have any sympathy for it anyway. So I chucked the plastic bag into the rubbish chute, washed my hands & here I am... typing my Blog about this incident.
Even though my heart is relieved now. It made me think to myself - how am I going to face these pests in my own house next time after I'm married? Rebecca is sure to run away screaming. Then its up to me to deal with it. Yet I'm afraid... I'm at a lost of what to do next time... but hopefully I'll learn to handle it well in future. Fancy a husband running away, just behind his wife... I can't imagine... & I don't wish to imagine... Sigh...
