A Surprise Visit…
A familiar face turned up at our Young Adult Bible Fellowship (YABF) this morning. Guess who? It’s Gerry Ong! One of the contestants from the Singapore Idol!
I was seated at the front of the Youth Room, when I saw this cheerful guy sitting right opposite me. At the first instance, I didn’t know who he was. After being introduced, my eyes opened wide & saw that it is indeed Gerry Ong!
Not that I fancy him or whatsoever from Singapore Idol, but I thought he did look familiar, just that this time round, I saw him face-to-face & he had also trimmed quite a lot of his hair, looking rather short like he had just passed out from BMT. He’s getting married this year too…
Off the camera, he does look quite small sized, compared to when he was on TV. And that thought really made me change quite a bit of my impression about how viewers watch people & things on TV.
He was today’s guest speaker from the social work organization ‘Focus on the Family’ & he was invited to my church to share about the topic on sexual purity, in the Christian context. Being in a social work organization, he also shares this topic to schools, but not in the Christian context… similar to the course on ‘No Apologies’ which was held at my church a few years back.
I was shocked to hear that he was a sniper during his Army days. Wow! That makes him part of the Commandos! Eh, snipers must have none other than perfect eyesight & accurate skills in fire arms… & that bowled me over for that moment. My mind drifted off for a few seconds… wondering how it would be like to be a sniper… you know, with camouflage & all.
It was a reasonably informative talk, ending with a short group discussion. I’m just glad that Gerry had managed to move on into the area of ministry work, after all that happened during the days of Singapore Idol & after that. Thinking back, how I wished that I had gotten a name card or something from him, perhaps to keep in contact. He seems to have changed quite a bit, since all that commotion last year… a lot more cheerful now… I wish him all the best! =)
