Melvin’s Sudden Death

About 2 weeks ago, I came home one evening to find Melvin (my hamster) lying dead inside his cage. I could not explain why and was in a semi state of shock. It was unbelievable because I had heard his running frantically on his wheel ball, as I was getting ready to leave for work that morning. It was so sudden that my Mum and I came home to find it dead!

Unlike Elfie (my first hamster), Melvin’s body was stiff… and I can’t explain what is the cause of his demise. I spent the next half an hour asking my Mum, why… why… why? And then the next half an hour, trying to think up of a few possible reasons as to why Melvin could suddenly die in less than a day.

Could it be a sudden heart attack, especially since his body was so stiff when it died? Could the inside of the water bottle be dirty? Could the bars of the cage have germs, especially since Melvin occasionally chews on them? Could the water that I give it be stale, even if it were just a few days (Melvin drinks little water). Could it have contracted an illness before I brought him home? Was he overfed? Does his sudden death have anything to do with his thin and short fur on his body? Could my Mum be right that I don’t have ‘green fingers’ to rear pets?

Up till now, I still don’t know what really happened. I know nothing except that 2 of my hamsters died in a short span of 10 months! What really is the matter? Is it the air in my house is not good or not well-ventilated? Could it be the haze? But Rebecca’s hamster doesn’t seem to be affected and it’s still alive after about 1 & ½ years! How I envy her hamster… why does mine have to be so different? Sigh…
