Knocking Doors

Today was my third time joining a small group of church friends to distribute love gifts to the neighboring Tekka community residents staying at the blocks just across the road. My church to extend a warm gift & wish of blessing to them by giving each household a set of red packets & a nicely wrapped-up pack of two mandarin oranges to these residents, to wish them a blessed Chinese New Year.

Along with this, we were also tasked to give a flyer to each Chinese household to invite them for our coming evangelistic event in March, where my church has invited Billy Wang, the Chinese radio DJ who had cancer, recovered & lived to share his testimony of God working in his life.

This is another of my church’s outreach program to establish relationships with our neighboring residents, so that we would not appear to be a church that is aloof & seemingly to distinguish ourselves from them.

It was Rebecca who invited me to join Shoo Feng, Elaine & Li Liang, so I plucked up the courage to join them. I thanked God that the night before, I prayed for courage & the words to say, coz I felt shy & afraid during the last two times when I visited these Tekka residents.

As expected, initially I was afraid, but I thanked God that this third time round, I had gathered more courage, as compared to the last two occasions when I tagged along to visit these residents. In fact, after distributing to two floors of residents, I began to feel more comfortable & started to enjoy this Community Penetration (CP) work!

I really thank God, for it is once again Rebecca who had caused a slight change in me to be involved in CP work! God has been working wonders in me through Rebecca. I also remember that several years ago, even though I was a Christian, I had my unhappiness & strong distorted views towards evangelism. It was God who used Rebecca to move me out of this & I started to become more receptive towards being involved in evangelism.

This soon grew into a strong conviction in reaching out, even to the cleaner lady at my StarHub office last year. There wasn’t much chance to relate with her over time, coz she left the job soon enough. But I managed to establish a casual chat interaction with her & that was already a start to my initiative in evangelism.

I have come quite far since those days & I really appreciate what Rebecca has done in my life, knowingly or unknowingly. I suspect unknowingly, which all the more indicates God at work in my life, through my beloved girlfriend who has stood by me all these years. How can I not love a girl like that?

My vision for our next step would be to ask the person in-charge whether Rebecca & I could sign up as CP volunteers to be allocated a specific residents’ block & a number of floors, so that we can focus our prayers & efforts on establishing a relationship with those residents.

I have many fears coz many of the residents are older than us, most in their 40s & 50s, old enough to be our parents. Yet, I don’t wish to be hindered by this fear. The least we could start with, is to distribute love gifts to these residents regularly during church outreach events, so at least over time, they would recognize our faces. Take it also an opportunity for us as a couple to do outreach work together! May God bless & guide us, as we seek to do our part in this area of ministry.
