Know & Confirm the Will of God
In this morning’s bible study, I learnt the first steps of how to discover & confirm the will of God. It uses the case study of a 19th century pastor from England named George Mueller.
What helps us to know God’s will?
- Counsel of the Holy Spirit through the teaching of God’s word.
- Waiting patiently on God until a word is heard from Him.
- Sincerity in seeking God’s direction.
Reliance on the Holy Spirit comes together with the confirmation from God’s word. Otherwise, we may run into delusions due to personal impressions or feelings about it.
Patience is to learn to spend time in solace, seeking & communing with God, so that as His sheep, we will learn to discern our Shepherd’s voice. Note that we need to learn to discern God’s voice, it doesn’t necessary become suddenly aware the exact moment we become a Christian.
Sincerity about seeking God’s direction means coming to God in prayer, with the mindset & heart that no will of its own. That is when we can push aside our subjective thoughts & first impressions about the matter.
George Mueller once said that nine-tenths of the trouble with people generally is because we rely largely on our own impressions, about things & about people. And nine-tenths of the difficulties are overcome when our hearts are ready to do the knowledge of what His will is.
I used to think that assumptions can be detrimental, so I seldom like to use this word or make general assumptions without finding out the facts. A new word is added onto my list that may lead to a detrimental mindset – impressions.
Both assumptions & impressions are un-deniably true, since we are human beings. Yet, this does not mean that reliance on this is sufficient. As Christians, we ought to take it a step further & clearer, but seeking God about it. Afterall, we each carry a testimony about Christ in us.
What mistakes should we be aware of?
- Dishonesty of heart
- Unrighteousness before God
- Impatience to wait on God
- Preferring the counsel of Man, to the declarations of scripture.
Once we have checked that we are no treading on the fine line of making such mistakes, we can begin to take note of circumstances where God provides for us. It could in the form of a financial aid to start an orphanage or help a poor rural state, or even God opening our eyes to present before us an opportunity to be of service to Him.
Prayer is necessary to confirm God’s will & check also that our minds are also at peace after we have sought God through a few times of prayer.
