What Is A Servant?
Apart from the many questions & thoughts that I gathered from today’s bible study, there was a striking question made a strong impact in my mindset.
The question is – What is a servant of God?
It’s interesting, the bible study guidebook begins by asking us to first define this in our own interpretation. Mine goes something like this – “A servant is a person who seeks the good & will of his Master above himself.” Sounds ‘cheem’, huh?
Then I realized that I was wrong. Well, some Christians may argue that the interpretation depends on the individual’s understanding & experience of the situation. I used to think that way too… but not anymore.
The author explains it simply that our interpretation is but of our own, thus we still need to seek the truth of what it really means from God’s point of view. And to do that, we have to refer to His word.
Referring to Jeremiah 18:1-6, God showed Jeremiah the concept of ‘The Potter & the Clay’. As the clay, we are to do two things. Firstly, the clay has to be molded. To do this, the clay has to be responsive to the Potter, so the Potter can make any instrument of His choosing. Then the clay has to do a second thing – it has to remain in the Potter’s hand coz the clay does not have the ability to do anything whatsoever. For in John 5:19-20, it states that even the Son can do nothing by Himself & can only do what He sees the Father doing.
So, this idea of being a servant encompasses a two-fold point – (1) Respond, (2) Remain. With this understanding from what is stated in God’s word, we can adjust our thoughts & our lives in clearer response to Him.
